James Butcher MA FISTD FHEA

Foundation and Development Programme ballet teacher

James was coached in many dance styles in his early training, including his initial passion, tap dance. He discovered a love for classical ballet and attended Central School of Ballet. He then received a scholarship to train at The Royal Ballet Upper School for his graduate year and graduated with a contract to join The Royal Ballet.

James then moved into the West End dancing in roles such as Older Billy in Billy Elliot the Musical (Victoria Palace Theatre), The original London cast of An American in Paris (The Dominion Theatre), and Dance Captain and Ballet Dancer in Phantom of the Opera (Her Majesty’s Theatre). He has also danced in several Royal Variety performances, appeared on UK and International Tours, and danced in movies such as Cinderella, The Nutcracker and the Four Realms and Artemis Fowl all for Walt Disney Studios.

James boasts a diverse teaching background in ballet. He has taught at institutions such as Sylvia Young Theatre School and Italia Conti Academy. He has been a part of the Artistic Leadership Team at Ballet Boost Associates and has led the Development Programme for London Children’s Ballet. Recently, James took on the role of Third Year Tutor at the Central School of Ballet. Additionally, he is a member of the teacher training team for the ISTD, where he regularly lectures at advanced 2 and Fellowship levels.

Academically, James holds a Master of Arts (MA) in Dance Technique Pedagogy, is a Fellow of the Imperial Classical Ballet faculty (ISTD) and holds ARAD status with the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD). James also gained the Fellowship in Higher Education (FHEA) and is a level 3 qualified Personal Trainer. In September 2023, James joined The Royal Ballet School as a ballet teacher.
