The design of each garment within The Royal Ballet School x Freed of London collection reflects a careful balance of tradition, craftsmanship and technical expertise. Every piece begins with hand-drawn sketches where the creative concept and elegant lines of the design are first imagined.

From these initial drawings, patterns are meticulously crafted, allowing the designer to shape each garment with precision and a deep understanding of the dancer’s form. The first prototypes are then carefully cut and constructed by Freed’s skilled machinists, whose expertise ensures each garment is assembled with the highest level of care and attention to detail.

These early samples are test-worn by dancers, allowing the team to observe how the garment performs in motion. Through a process of refinement, the garments are repeatedly adjusted and perfected to ensure the ideal balance of fit, comfort, support and freedom of movement. This thoughtful and collaborative process continues until every garment meets the exacting standards expected of both Freed of London and The Royal Ballet School, resulting in beautiful garments that honour the artistry and discipline of classical ballet.

  • Sustainable performance fabric – the garments are made using a premium techno-fabric containing ECONYL regenerated nylon, created from recycled waste such as discarded fishing nets, carpet fibres and plastics that would otherwise pollute the oceans & landfills.
  • Infinitely regeneratable – ECONYL nylon can be recycled and regenerated repeatedly without losing quality, supporting a more circular approached to fabric production.
  • Designed for dancers – from the hand-drawn design sketches to the fabric chosen, every process is meticulously covered to ensure the highest standards. The fabric is soft, breathable, durable and elegant, offering a unique balance of muscular compression and comfort to support movement and performance.
  • Made in the UK – all garments are manufactured in one UK facility, helping to reduce transport impact on the environment and supporting the long-standing tradition of British craftsmanship.
  • Hand-crafted production – from design sketches to hand-cutting the fabrics to expert machinists assembling each garment, every piece is carefully made, by hand, here in the UK to ensure the highest quality.
  • Responsible packaging – packaging is 100% recyclable, made from high-grade polymer created from UK Household waste, with fully recyclable kimbles & swing tags.
  • Working with UK suppliers – Freed of London works closely with UK-based suppliers to support responsible production and help reduce the overall carbon footprint of the collection.

Every garment in The Royal Ballet School x Freed of London collection is proudly manufactured in the United Kingdom, reflecting Freed’s long tradition of British craftsmanship and The Royal Ballet School’s grounding in tradition.

From design to production, each process is carefully carried out by skilled specialists at every stage. From the designer who hand-sketches and produces the patterns to the hand-cutting of fabrics, to the experienced machinists who meticulously construct each piece, every garment is created with precision and care. This attention to detail ensures the highest level of quality and durability required by our dancers.

Once complete, each item is carefully packaged by hand, maintaining the level of care synonymous with the Freed name. By keeping the entire manufacturing process within one UK facility, Freed of London significantly reduces transportation and helps lower the overall carbon footprint of the collection.

In addition, Freed works closely with UK suppliers to further support responsible production. All packaging is 100% recyclable, produced from high-grade polymer made from UK Household waste, and all Kimbles & Swing tags are also fully recyclable. Together, these practices combine heritage craftsmanship with modern sustainability, creating garments that honour both the tradition of ballet and the future of responsible manufacturing.

Freed of London was founded in 1929 by Frederick and Dora Freed. They began with the simple premise of making a pointe shoe to fit the dancer’s foot. This ethos of putting the dancer’s needs at the heart of the business is still true today. Freed of London still uses the same craft based, handmade system to produce our pointe shoes. Over the years our product range had evolved to include ballroom and stage shoes, as well as dancewear. Everything we design and produce is made inhouse by our staff. Today the Freed of London name is globally synonymous with quality products that are expertly produced.
