Our students perform at Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee concert
30 of our students performed at the BBC’s Platinum Party at the Palace on Saturday 4 June as part of this years Jubilee celebrations. As one of The Queen’s charities, we were thrilled to have our students join the performance to commemorate her 70 years as Monarch.
Platinum Party at the Palace
The Platinum Party at the Palace was one of many events held to celebrate The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Hosted at Buckingham Palace, the concert was commissioned and produced by BBC studios. Twenty-two thousand people attended with over 7500 tickets allocated to key workers, members of the Armed Forces, volunteers and charity members. It was also broadcast live on BBC One, BBC iPlayer and BBC Radio 2.
A dazzling line-up
Stars from the stage, screen and sporting world joined together for this momentous occasion. Performances took place throughout the evening upon a unique set of three connecting stages. National and international performers such as Queen, Andrea Bocelli, Diversity, Ella Eyre and Alicia Keys were all part of the star-studded programme. The event was closed by Diana Ross, who performed live in the UK for the first time in 15 years.
Environmental themes
Our students performed alongside alumni and Royal Ballet Principals Lauren Cuthbertson and Reece Clark in a piece set to Hans Zimmer’s Planet Earth Suite II. The segment was based on the importance of nature and sustainability, choreographed by our alumna Kristen McNally. Costumes for the dancers were designed by Olivia Pomp using former ballet and opera costumes repurposed from the Royal Opera House costume store.
Uniting to celebrate
Our Artistic Director Christopher Powney commented on the performance:
What an astonishing event, and how honoured we were to be invited to participate in the ‘Party at the Palace’ in honour of our Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Our students were excited and delighted to be dancing on a stage shared by so many of our global top artists and for a truly world-wide audience and were in awe of being part of such a momentous occasion. Both our students and alumni did us very proud and will probably remember this remarkable experience forever.
